Emma Cecilia Saavedra Lira
Emma Saavedra, Ph.D. She graduated Biologist from the Faculty of Sciences (1991) at the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM). She obtained Master and PhD degrees cum laude in Basic Biomedical Research (Biochemistry) in 1994 and 1997, respectively, from UNAM. She continued with post-doctoral positions at Tufts University, Massachusetts, USA (1997-1999) working on molecular aspects of host-trypanosome interaction and at the Tropical Medicine Unit, de Duve Institute, Catholic University of Louvain, Brussels, Belgium (2000-2001) studying intermediary metabolism of trypanosomatid parasites. She was principal investigator at the Department of Biochemistry of the National Institute of Cardiology Ignacio Chavez of Mexico since 2001and became Head of Department in April 2021. Her main research project is the study of the mechanisms of control and regulation of metabolic pathways in parasitic and pathological cells by applying the fundamentals of metabolic regulation, Metabolic Control Analysis and computational metabolic modeling. Her research projects have received 9 grants. She has tutored 24 undergraduate and graduate students. Every semester she teaches the courses of metabolism and metabolic regulation for undergraduate and graduate students at UNAM. She has published near 105 research articles in indexed international research journals and 8 book chapters. Over 4199 articles (Scopus) have cited her work, accounting a Hirsch index of 33.
