The problem
The economic pressure makes the producers produce more effectively. At the same time the environment requirements becoming harder should be followed. For meeting these antagonistic requirements the precision farming has successfully been applied in some other place. Will this technology justify itself in variable production conditions of Estonia?
The objectives
Elaborating the recommendations for applying precision farming. Find out presumptions to use precision farming in Estonia: 1) machinery and devices, needed for precision farming;2) software, needed for precision farming and 3) profitability of precision farming.
Conclusions
In Estonia crops have heterogenic growth conditions on fields and this is main reason to implement precision farming technology. Estonian farmers have possibilities to supply machines and devices for precision farming if they have enough money for that. Calculations show that farmer should use GPS systems at least on 150 ha arable land in case of cheaper systems and 300 ha in case of expensive (but more precise) systems. Auto steering system is good help for precise steering on fields and more and more big farmers are supplying these devices to work with better quality and achieve more savings in fertilizers, chemicals, fuel, work time losses and to lengthen daily work time in case of bad visibility conditions. ERIA has possibilities to help farmers to analyse different field maps and compose application maps. Precision farming is fast developing area and new devices and possibilities are appearing steadily, so there are several new things requiring studying in Estonian conditions like determining a crop's Nitrogen demand by measuring the crop's light reflectance or pendulum. Also have to study additionally variable fertilising, pest management, soil cultivation and other possibilities related to precision faming.
