Projekt viiakse läbi Põhjamaade Põllumajandusministeeriumi poolt finantseeritava programmi "Era- ja avaliku sektori koostöö eelaretuse ala" raames. Projekt seisneb karjamaa-raiheina aretuses kasutatava genofondi omaduste varieerumise piiride laiendamises ja uudsete tunnuste introdutseerimises, võimaldamaks konkurentsivõimelist sordiaretust kliimamuutuste tingimustes. Fenotüübilisi omadusi seostatakse sekveneeritud genotüüpidega, luues eelduse genoomipõhiseks selektsiooniks. Projektis osalevad põhjamaade heintaimede aretajad ja taimegeneetika alal tegelevad ülikoolid.
The project is carried out in frames of Nordic Public Private partnership in pre-breeding. The pre-breeding programme is coordinated by Nordic Genetic resources Centre. PPP for pre-breeding in perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne L.) Ongoing climate change has evoked a need for broadening the variation and introduction of novel traits into the breeders' gene pools. Pre-breeding of perennial ryegrass should assure the sustainability of its breeding and competitiveness of the northern cultivars in the future. Detection of links between the phenotype and genotype will pave the way for genomic selection.
Perennial ryegrass has been chosen since it is the forage grass species that is in
greatest need for improvement. Timothy and meadow fescue can already be grown in
almost all areas in the Nordic and Baltic countries but an improvement of perennial ryegrass
can make it useful in new areas, thus improving the yield.
This project aims at improving the winterhardiness, persistence and other important traits
for northern Europe. It will also make plant breeding in northern Europe more prepared to
meet new demands due to climate change, political decisions or consumer demand.
We do this by
Investigating the present status of commercial material
Collecting and documenting material with large genetic variation from several parts
of the world
Creating breeding populations with large variation and populations selected for
extremes of different traits
Developing tools for using marker assisted selection in further breeding
Raite osutus Põhjamaades 22 talvekindla sordi seas saagikuselt teiseks ja hea kohastumisvõimega sordiks. Oluliselt laienes aretuses kasutatav raiheina genofondi muutlikkus.
